They’re one of my favourite wellington hi-tech companies, because their online mapping service zoomin.co.nz is just so brilliantly useful and localised that you seem to use it everyday.
zoomin / projectX are playing in a really challenging market for online mapping as they’re along side global giant’s google with Google Maps, which is enough to give you at least a few sleepless nights, however John and the crew seem to hold their own, and really it’s only about once a week that I find John a little crazy : )
Zoomin are holding their own because they continue to provide exactly what someone who lives in New Zealand needs, up to date, dynamic local content. Like most, I play with google earth and google maps when exploring the world, and yes initially it seems like having just one mapping service is what you’d want, but the reality is, when I’m in New Zealand, I want the best local content. I’m here, right now in Wellington. I want to know whats around me right now, where I can go, and what I can do. The only people who can do this and be focused on thsi requirement are New Zealanders. With their latest zoomin 2.0 are sending a clear message that local content rules when it comes to online maps.
Zoomin is on the move, they’re self funded so far, and have managed to secure a brilliant deal with trademe who use the platform to launch smaps. They landed 2 awards at the TUANZ Internet awards this week, the first being the inspiration award, not surprisingly for the commitment they’ve had playing next to google, and just got a good write up in the herald.
