2 things that currently register as being valuable to anyone trying to build an online business in NZ appear to be noticably weak on ‘Wellington’, and I’m wondering why.

1. Building Web Businesses

Last weeks Building Successful Web Businesses day in Auckland was brilliant and it was the first time I and most everyone else would have heard the stories of the likes of Torpedo7 who are cranking millions online, and emerging as one of the countries biggest online retailers. Founder Guy tells a great story that anyone trying to succeed in business online will learn from. John Holt from Talent Management app Sonar6 tells of their tale of getting to 7 digits and StarNow’s Jeremy tells of getting to over 800,000 registered members. Auckland represents

Auckland packed out the room at deloittes which was over 80 people, and pulled out well over a dozen interesting online businesses I’d never heard of before including: Personal Budgeting Tool - Who Stole My Money, Parenting Community - Kiwi Families, Online Training - Litmos, CRM - BizWorks, Dog Products - Canine Spirit to name just a few. Everyone there broke into each presentation no matter how fast talking the speakers were and turned it into a discussion across the room, so it was a good engaging day for all, new starters and those further down the track.

2. StartUp TV

This is the same for StartupTV, the Auckland companies just seem to get it, and understand the value of using the media and TV to get some visibility around their businesses, Wellington again is just well behind here on the number of applicants. There’s really no need to over-complicate this, there’s a TV series focused on profiling New Zealands online community, so if you’re in this space, then just get into it and get some air-time. There have been some different initial reviews on what the series could be like, but just come along tomorrow and chat to StartUp founder Patty and have a chat about your concerns and get teh real gist.

While Escalator says that Wellington has a reasonable size crew registered to attend tomorrow (Wednesday), considering we’re supposed to be the web heartbeat of the country, I would have expected a turnout the size of Auckland easily, just from the online startups I know around town I can count these numbers, does everyone else seem to know something that these guys don’t?
